Joe de Compiegne '75

Joe was born in Midland to Henri and Mary de Compiegne in 1960. He attended Trinity School from kindergarten through 9th grade. He participated in football and basketball. After Trinity he attended boarding school at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire. Both of his sisters, Annie and Elise, also attended Trinity. Both Henri and Mary were active supporters of the School and served on many committees and on the Board at Trinity, his father as President. He attended The University of Texas in Austin and afterward worked in real estate in Austin. In 1985, when real estate was beginning to crash, his father offered him a job to work with him in the oil and gas business back in Midland. He figured he would try this for a few years thinking that he did not want to stay long term in Midland. He thought he would then move to Colorado or back to Austin. 36 years later, Joe is still in Midland. It was the best decision he ever made. He got the chance to work with and learn from his father for 20 years until his passing in 2006.

In 1991, he met his future wife, Mindy, in Midland. They were married in 1993. They have two daughters, Caitlin and Mary Emma, both of whom attended Trinity School. Caitlin graduated from Trinity School in 2018 and Mary Emma attended through 8th grade, before attending boarding school. Joe now manages his family’s oil and gas and investment businesses. He is also Managing Partner of Fred W. Shield and Company, a mineral partnership with the Shield/Ayres family with offices in Midland and San Antonio.

Joe is active in other business ventures. He is chairman of the board of Spinal Stabilization Technologies. This is a medical device company specializing in nucleus replacement for degenerative spine disease. He also sits on the board of Sivalls Company in Odessa. Joe is active in various capacities with many non-profits. He is currently President of the Midland College Foundation board and is on the Midland Memorial Foundation Board of Governors and the High Sky Endowment Board. In the past, he has been President of the Board of COM Aquatics and the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum. He has also served on the High Sky
Children’s Ranch and Midland Memorial Hospital Boards. He has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Christmas in Action, and the Soup Kitchen. Joe and Mindy are active members at Christ Church Anglican in Midland. Joe serves as a lay reader and Eucharist minister. He is currently Senior Warden of the Vestry at Christ Church.

Aside from supporting his daughters in their sports and activities at Trinity School, he has served on the Board of Trustees and as President of the Endowment Committee. As an alum and past parent of Trinity School, Joe continues to support his alma mater. Joe and his family have been involved in building projects and the growth of the endowment over the years. In 2016, the new de Compiegne Upper School opened in memory of Joe’s father, Henri de Compiegne. A blessing for Trinity students and faculty for years to come. Joe and Mindy spend their free time at their home in Crested Butte, Colorado.
