Secondary Chess Team Scrapes by Lee High For Its First Win

Charlie Vetter
A recap of the events by Chess Coach Charlie Vetter:

The Trinity 7-12 grade chess team started its first-ever season with a narrow 10-8 victory over a very strong Lee High School squad.

The Chargers were led by three veteran players, Ayushman Mallik, Avi Mallik, and Tucker Dixon who all won both of their matches. Avi and Tucker won their games without incident, but two-time Regional champion Ayushman had a much more exciting match.
Before sitting down for his first game Ayushman said he was out of practice, but it didn't show as he played perfectly all the way until his second move which was a horrible blunder. That put him in a serious deficit, down material, and in a positional bind. This was when you could see how Ayushman could handle the pressure of winning the 150 player Regionals two years in a row.  Down badly, he avoided trades, complicated the position, until he could spring a trap, winning his opponent's queen with a discovered attack with a bishop and knight. When asked about the game, Ayushman opined, "yeah, that was bad."

With Trinity ahead 9-8, the match came down to the one game still going which featured one of Trinity's newer players Nicholas Spangher.  It was a long, difficult game, but Nicholas eventually won it giving Trinity the 10-8 win. So did the team carry Nicholas out on their shoulders? Nah, this is the chess team. No celebrations in the endzone. Just a handshake and a good game and it's over.

Trinity's next match will be against Goddard.
