US Chess Update

Charlie Vetter
The Trinity Upper School Chess Team is close to finishing its first season, and after a rough start, it looks like they are closing in on an undefeated season.
The team showed its rust in its first match, barely scraping by Lee High School by a score of 10-8 thanks to a clutch win by Nicholas Sanghor to clinch the victory.

That scare seemed to jolt the Chargers into more serious play though as they next beat Goddard 17.5 - 2.5 and then Midland High School 17-2. That set up Trinity at 3-0 in a key match against Greenwood also coming in at 3-0.  In the end, the Trinity beat Greenwood 18-3.

The Chargers have just one match left before Regionals, a makeup date for the snowed-out match against the 1-2 team from the Classical Academy of the Permian Basin. Another possible rematch is against Lee High, who has asked for another shot at everyone's favorite team.

The Charger team is a team of champions. On top board is two-time Regionals Champ Ayushman Mallik. Ayushman won the 7-12 Regionals last year and the K-6 Regionals the year before that. After him comes captain of last year's undefeated K-6 team Avi Mallik, and then two more Regional champions, Alex Khouri and Gavin Dorfner. Alex won the 7-12 Regionals two years ago, and Gavin won the K-6 Regionals last year. Three Regional winners in the lineup make the Chargers an imposing squad.

Also starring for the team this year were Andrew Chen, Michael Herrera, Tucker Dixon, Morgan Crutchfield, John Dorr, and Justin Blaylock.
