History at Trinity School

Mr. Little
Over the years, I have had adults come to me and say that they did not really like history when they were in school, but that they really enjoyed it as an adult.  There are so many reasons that this might be true.  As we age, we mature and become more knowledgeable.  Our ability to relate to the world increases.
Having said that, Upper School is for teenagers and our desire at Trinity includes making history relevant and interesting to all of our students.  A few years ago, when we adopted the trimester schedule, Trinity School made curriculum changes to give students the power to choose what classes in social studies they would be most interested in at the sophomore level.  We began to schedule mini-courses in history in order to offer a deeper dive into a particular subject or time period.  Students are now able to choose three classes from eight offerings.  We teach: The 60’s, The West, The 20’s and 30’s, The Civil War, World Cultures, The Presidents, The World Wars, and Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.  These courses align with the experience, expertise and interests of our current teaching faculty.

This group of courses has changed over time and we are still looking for new titles to offer that will increase interest in our department and fill gaps in the curriculum.  These courses are also open to juniors and seniors with a taste for more depth and greater exposure to social studies.  As a student, it is empowering to make choices in directing your learning and as a teacher, it is professionally rewarding to teach these courses.
