Alex Bell, '06, Inducted into Order of the Gownsmen

With parents Randy and Glenna Bell in the audience, Trinity graduate Alex Bell ('06) was inducted into the Order of the Gownsmen at Sewanee (University of the South) on Oct. 7. Among Sewanee's many customs, none is more distinctive than the wearing of the gown by students and faculty. The Order of the Gownsmen was established in1873 by Chaplain William Porcher DuBose. Now, the Order of the Gownsmen-- bestowed upon those who meet the grade requirements -- remains the body responsible for maintaining the spirit, traditions, and ideals of The University of the South. A student government body unique to Sewanee, being inducted into the Order of the Gownsmen is both a privilege and a responsibility. Acceptance of the gown is a pledge to aid in the governing of the student body through continued academic leadership, community awareness and moral accountability. Today, members of the Order of the Gownsmen advise the Student Assembly and maintain and promote the spirit, tradition, and ideals of the University. Members also run the Election Committee, which is composed of all Proctors and is chaired by the President of the Order.
