Malone Sams, '06, on First Lady's Photography Staff
Malone Sams met up with the MOAS group in early December. more....
Malone has been working on the photography staff for First Lady, Laura Bush. The MOAS group got a private tour of the White House and was photographed by the official photographer! It's nice to know people who know people in high places.
Malone reports about her experience: "I am assistant to the First Lady's photographer. I basically help her with whatever she needs i.e. making edits, help with shoots, lighting, make prints, etc. I was looking for internships or jobs relating to photography and found out I could apply as an intern for the White House Photo Office from their web page. I sent in an application and I started as an intern last year. They put me as the First Lady Photographer's intern. After my internship was over they offered me a full time job as First Lady Photographer's Assistant.
All of the photographers at the White House are actually titled White House Photographer. However, there is one White House Photographer for the First Lady, 3 for the President, and one for the Vice President. So each photographer has a certain focus and occasionally helps out the other photographers as well. So even though my boss and I primarily focus on the First Lady, the whole White House Photo Office works as a team."
