Matt Hinkley, '00, Sends New Update

Matt currently works full-time as a musician for a theater (as a music director and instrumentalist) and on the rock scene (both as a guitarist and as a singer/songwriter and frontman for his own band).

In the winter and spring of 2009, Matt served as Resident Music Director, Conductor, and Guitarist for the off-Broadway production of ROOMS at New World Stages; ROOMS also earned him his first conducting credit for an off-Broadway cast recording (due out late summer on Time Life). Matt also landed his first Broadway cast recording credit playing guitar for the original cast recording of Glory Days. Other highlights include the critically-acclaimed Things To Ruin: The Songs of Joe Iconis (music supervisor), Green Eyes (MD/guitar), playing countless shows throughout NYC, and acting as co-producer/vocalist/multi-instrumentalist for the upcoming Joe Iconis Rock 'n' Roll Jamboree studio album. Matt's self-titled record is available on iTunes and CDBaby.com; Radio RNR will be including his song "When It Comes To You" on their Acoustic Explosion compilation, due out in September. Updates, media, and information can always be found at matthinkley.com.

6.) Listen to some songs

Hey everybody. Been doing lots of fun stuff. Aside from all things ROOMS-related, I played a crazy-wild show for Ryan Scott Oliver at Joe's Pub, music directed a benefit cabaret for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, played a little guitar and bass for some readings of some great new shows by writers in NYU's Tisch Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, and tried to keep cramming a little of my own music into the cracks. I also got a new kitten, who is the best thing ever to happen to anyone ever.

1.) Thanks to everyone who came out to see ROOMS, which closed May 10th. I spent over three months working as the Resident Music Director, Conductor, and Guitarist for this phenomenal off-Broadway production, and it could not have been more rewarding. We got great reviews and put up a solid fight against a tough economy. The good news is that we just finished up in the studio laying down tracks for the original cast recording with Time Life; be on the lookout for a summer release date.

2.) I've got some video up on matthinkley.com from one of the most recent Matt Hinkley band shows, March 31st at NYC's Village Underground. Many thanks to Alicia Dempster for the camerawork and the digital files. Check out a couple non-album tracks - "Emaline" and "Kymberly" - as well as an alternate live-only version of "Blue & Grey."

3.) SHOW TONIGHT! Late notice and all, but I'll be playing a solo acoustic set as part of "Red Door Rocks," a benefit for the Red Door Theatre Company. Kenny's Castaways (157 Bleecker St.), $10, music starts at 8:30. I'll go on somewhere around 11 pm.

(Also, for my Washington Heights friends, I'll be playing some guitar - and likely another acoustic set of my own - with my buddy Nate Vaughn on Memorial Day at 181st and Cabrini. Yes, that's the name of the place. Music starts around 7:30 pm.)

4.) My friend and death-defying piano god Vadim Feichtner vultured me from the ashes of ROOMS to play some guitar for a great show he's music directing, The Burnt Part Boys. The show runs May 26-June 6 at the Vineyard Theatre, in preparation for a full run at Playwrights Horizons in the spring. Check it out.

THINGS TO RUIN New York Times review

---------

I know it's been a long time since the last Hinkley Mailing.  But fear not, I did not "go to the corner store for a pack of cigarettes."  I've just been on an unexpected Gig Hiatus, explained mostly by the fact that I've had the privilege to spend my time making music for some very exciting theater projects.

In October, I took my music down to Texas to play some amazing shows, both solo and with my good friend Tyler Summers; the benefit concert back in my hometown for Midland Area AIDS Support was truly one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.  I was also reminded of the hospitality and attraction of small towns- Tyler and I had the best night of the trip playing the tiny, packed Revolution Bar & Cafe in Bryan, TX.

Despite having not played a show of my own since October, I've continued to write new material and, in December, recorded five songs on acoustic with producer/engineer-extraordinaire Mat Leland.  I'm happy to offer every one of you a free download of one of these new tracks, "Emaline," at the link above.

Upon returning to NYC, I was honored to music direct/supervise two Joe Iconis projects:  ReWrite, a new musical off-Broadway at Urban Stages, and Things To Ruin, a critically-acclaimed concert (Times review above) which ran at The Zipper Factory.  I also music directed a reading of a new show, All Fall Down, and had a blast playing lead guitar on a bunch of Heart songs for another new musical, Allies.

ROOMS: a rock romance

My current and most exciting project, however, is serving as resident music director and conductor/guitarist for ROOMS, a rock musical starring Leslie Kritzer and Doug Kreeger, which opens March 16th off-Broadway at New World Stages.  We are currently in rehearsals, and in all honesty, I don't know that I've ever believed more strongly in a show than I do in this one.  If you live in the NYC area or plan on traveling here, please consider coming to see ROOMS early in its run- we need superb word of mouth right off the bat in order to survive this economy.  I promise it will be well worth your time- there are even limited $10 and $20 tickets available.

Until next time.

Matt
