Lower School

Lower School at Trinity is an active, purposeful, and developmentally appropriate learning environment, a place where teachers meet children at their “growing edge” and encourage them to be all that they can be. Children in Kindergarten through Grade Three benefit from hallmark programs including:
  • Daily praise, prayer, and worship in All Saints Chapel, rooted in the Bible and consistent with the Christian faith;
  • Guided Reading (Fountas and Pinnell) – small groups allowing for meaningful engagement with text at each student’s instructional level;
  • Direct instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics skills;
  • Take Flight (Scottish Rite Hospital) – supplemental reading instruction for children identified as dyslexic delivered by Certified Academic Language Therapists;
  • Writing Pathways (Lucy Calkins) – regular practice with writing, revising, editing, and sharing narrative, informational, opinion, and poetry pieces;
  • Original Literature Units – literacy studies, using age-appropriate texts and themes, mapped in the School’s online curriculum service (Atlas Mapping);
  • Everyday Mathematics, math instruction developing fluency with basic skills and application of thinking skills to problem solving;
  • FOSS (Full Option Science System) supporting investigation and discovery to build science concepts and processes;
  • FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary Schools), building competency with the Spanish language and curiosity about another culture;
  • ART and MUSIC classes taught by specialists in the disciplines;
  • Weekly trips to the Marian Blakemore Library, a newly renovated and inviting space;
  • One-to-one access to Chromebooks in each classroom, leveraging technology to support instruction;
  • BIGG (Big Ideas for the Greater Good) fostering an understanding of servant leadership and a responsibility to give back to the community and the world at large;
  • Daily physical education and recess time allowing for the development of the body and supporting the development of the intellect;
